With today’s problems, increasing fragmented families, rising juvenile offenses, growth in child abuse and neglect, more alcoholism and drug dependence - it’s harder than ever to be a good parent. There’s help, designed especially for you, from the Effective Parenting program offered by The Omaha Home for Boys.

Based on the principles of child development first articulated some 30 years ago, this program has been adjusted and refined to reflect the changing times. The course, in its current form, was developed at Father Flanagan’s Boys Home at Girls and Boys Town. The Omaha Home for Boys has offered this program since 1993.

This proven program has worked for thousands of parents and families across the country. These principles, applied in your home, will work for you!

Down-to-Earth, Practical Methods

Starting with the first class, you’ll learn skills that you can put to work right away in your family. You’ll learn by doing (through role-playing that involves the whole class) and by watching (through videotapes).

Your questions and discussion are encouraged. This course focuses on the actions you can take to become a more effective parent.

Major topics include:

  • Effective discipline
  • Effective praise
  • How to set your children up for success
  • How to respond to your child's problem behaviors
  • Teaching self-control
  • Developing a parenting plan to use with your children.

How It Works

The Effective Parenting program through The Omaha Home for Boys consists of six sessions, two hours each. Attending all sessions is extremely important, as each one builds on the one before.

The course is for parents of children from infancy to age 18. The course is most effective when attended by all persons assuming the parental role in the home. No children are allowed.

Class sizes are limited to ensure that each attendee gets adequate attention. Your cost (under $20) helps cover the cost of the class workbook, which is yours to keep. Financial assistance, if needed, is available.

For A Stronger Family Tomorrow... Start Today!

First-time parents…experienced parents…families in crisis or families looking for something more…virtually all parents can benefit from Effective Parenting. Whether your family life is calm and happy or stormy and unhappy you will learn principles that can enrich your relationship with your kids and effective ways to get better results.

The Omaha Home for Boys underwrites the cost of the program because we believe it’s an exciting, effective way to support our mission of strengthening youth and families.

Comments from Past Participants

"We have a lot less arguing in our home. And when we do have an argument, it does not escalate into a shouting match."

"It’s not threatening. I was thrilled that other parents were there because they wanted to be better parents."

One relationship at a time, you can make a difference.
