SPEAKING PERSONALLY
Let's take a moment to talk about . . .
Being Prepared for What’s Just Around the Corner

Soon, we will be starting a new century of care for young people.

We are preparing a wider range of services for youth and families, to meet a need that is greater than ever. The changes being made at The Omaha Home for Boys are the result of our Long Range Planning Strategy.

New programs, put in place over the last three years, are maturing and benefiting the young people they were designed to serve.

Transitional Living is a program helping 18 to 22 year olds further their education, find a career and learn the life skills they need to be successful. The program, housed in a two building apartment complex, continually has a waiting list for entry.

Wellness for Life and Independent Living are programs that teach life skills in a classroom setting. Tobacco Free Teens, Anger Control and Self Governance help boys recognize and change problem behaviors.

The new Youth and Family Services Building, completed in 1995, provides more space for family counseling, parent training and placement interviews for new residents. It is also the location of our Visitor Center and History Museum and a Conference Center providing meeting space for community and educational groups.

Remodeling and updating of all cottages has continued for several years, making them more efficient and “homey”. The Forster-Patton Building was converted into a cottage, increasing our capacity to 56 boys.

The Smith Administration Building has been expanded and completely renovated to provide a more pleasant work space for the people who keep operations of the Home running smoothly.

All of these projects were started less than three years ago. Further renovation of existing buildings will continue and new cottages are on the drawing board.

Before the year 2000 arrives, we will be ready to embark on another century of making a difference in the lives of more young people and families than ever before.

It is heartening to know that the future of The Omaha Home for Boys is made possible by people like you, who care enough to provide ongoing support that will benefit young people and families for generations to come. If you have a chance to visit Omaha, please stop by the Home and see what is happening. It is a very exciting time. Thanks for being a friend to our boys!

Sincerely,

John C. Furstenberg
